A Beautiful Life English Movie 2009
Reviews :

From director Alejandro Chomski comes this indie drama, adapted from a play by writer Wendy Hammond. The film stars Denise Richards (Wild Things) as an exotic dancer and features supporting contributions from Michael Madsen, Debi Mazar, and Dana Delany. ~ Matthew Tobey, All Movie Guide
An ironically titled descent into L.A.’s muddy depths, A Beautiful Life invokes some serious topics. But it’s hard to take them seriously, because the movie piles up characters and controversies more or less at random.

Introduced while riding a bus toward the city’s Skid Row, Maggie (Angela Sarafyan) is a teenage runaway with good reason to run. When she finds temporary refuge in a homey strip club, a quick shower reveals her battered shoulders and back.

zThe joint’s featured attraction, Chinese hoofer Esther (Bai Ling), is shocked by Maggie’s bruises. She commands the club’s Salvadoran janitor, David (Jesse Garcia), to give the girl a place to sleep in his grungy industrial loft.

Maggie, a willowy suburban princess, and David, a beefy illegal immigrant, are bristlingly incompatible, so inevitably they fall in love. But Maggie soon admits to a sexual kink that complicates the relationship.

This conflicted romance would be enough to sustain a drama, especially given the eventual arrival of Maggie’s despicable dad (Jonathan LaPaglia) and loving but ineffectual mom (Desperate Housewives’ Dana Delany).

But Wendy Hammond and Deborah Calla’s script, adapted from Hammond’s stage play, insists on boosting the squalor with gamy subplots. Many of them involve Maggie and David’s frantic quest for cash.

Driven from his job by an immigration raid, David is threatened with eviction. Maggie’s temporary gigs include selling homemade bracelets on the street and working at a Korean mini-market that pays less than the minimum wage. Oh yeah, and being a drug courier.
Meanwhile, Esther fights for true love, and awaits her big break as a chanteuse. Luckily, she works at the sort of indulgent nudie bar whose management (and audience) doesn’t mind that she’d rather sing than strip.

When not hauling packets of dope to pistol-packing supermodels, meanwhile, Maggie studies for her GED. She also seeks counseling for sexual dysfunction, thanks to a librarian (Debi Mazar) who doubles as an unofficial social worker.

Argentine-bred director Alejandro Chomski could have done better with this preposterous saga, but not probably much. Even with a bigger budget and higher production values, the screenplay would have defeated him.

The actors face a similar dilemma. Sarafyan and Garcia are engaging enough, and the sharp-featured Ling is always a formidable presence, even if delivering lines in English is not among her principal skills.

But these performers, and most of the other ones, struggle with scenes that are simply unplayable. And despite closeups of gyrating strippers, the movie can’t be enjoyed as campy sleaze. A Beautiful Life is too earnest to be a hoot, and too amateurish to be anything else.

Maggie (Angela Sarafyan), a middle-class Caucasian girl running from a brutal father, David (Jesse Garcia), an illegal from El Salvador who has lost his mother along the way, and Esther (Bai Ling), a Chinese stripper and would-be singer in a blond wig, are all young adults who have befriended each other in Los Angeles (”where some come to hide and others come to dream”), in the October 9th select (Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco, Seattle, and Chicago) theatrical release of the film A Beautiful Life. The film has an October 2nd exclusive release at the Sunset 5 in Los AngelesAlthough the energy of youth can be seemingly limitless, the small group is constantly confronted with bullies, robbers manipulators, possible deportation, unpaid bills and the need to work jobs they never envisioned (e.g. running drugs) just to get by.

“I wanted a beautiful life too,” David tells Maggie, but the past gets in the way, and somehow the present is always fraught with worry. Angela Saraflyan gives a very touching performance as Maggie, helped by the fact that her looks are not typical or perfect, and Esther, played by Bai Ling, a beauty to whom guys are constantly attracted, can only dream of a large stage on which she’s singing to thousands and thousands of people.Yet ultimately, the friends are loyal to each other and try to understand each other, although each comes from such a dissimilar background. What can David do when he has no money to hire someone to find his mother “left somewhere near the border”, and what can Esther do when the guys she wants have no intention of being faithful to her and the guys she doesn’t want obsess over her? Maggie may have the most difficult situation of them all, discovering learned elements within herself that are decidedly unattractive and that are now strongly rooted in her subconscious
I would recommend watching A Beautiful Life with the family, because although it’s unrated there are many sexual and drug themes involved. The film represents life as messy and somewhat impossible (when you’re severed from your family), although the performances of the three main characters are both solid and endearing, and, in the end, hopeful.

Wanted

This is for fans and foes of Salman Khan… Fans, rejoice, Salman is back with a vengeance with WANTED. This is his deadliest performance to date. Yes, you read it right!
Foes, sorry, you won’t be able to lash out at him or pick on him or launch a vicious tirade this time. The spate of flops should come to a grinding halt with WANTED.

Let’s get this straight. WANTED rides on Salman Khan’s star power. He may not be the best actor in town, but in a film like WANTED, in a role that seems like an extension of his personality, you can’t think of anyone else enacting this role with flourish.

A remake of POKIRI [made in Telugu and Tamil versions], WANTED is a full on masala film. Recall the successful potboilers of yore. Recall how the good guy would reduce 10 hoodlums to pulp in a fraction of seconds. Recall how heroism prevailed in the end, no matter how adverse the circumstances were or how powerful the villains would be. Recall those movies in which logic took a backseat since the focus was on entertainment… You relive those moments as reel after reel of WANTED unfolds.

A departure from candyfloss movies and diabetic-sweet characters that most Hindi movies boast of, WANTED takes you back to those days when popular cinema reigned supreme, when the sole motive of the film-maker was to entertain.

The daring hero and his herogiri, the nave girlfriend, the corrupt cop, the dreaded don, the don’s moll, the fist-clinching henchmen… WANTED is for those who seek unabashed entertainment and relish masala films. Damn the indomitable critics, pseudo intellectuals and connoisseurs of parallel cinema, this one’s not for them. WANTED is for the aam junta.

Radhe [Salman Khan] is a hardcore gangster. A sharpshooter with a sharp brain, he works for Gani Bhai [Prakash Raj], the dreaded Mafioso, but on his own terms. Totally fearless, Radhe single-handedly eliminates Gani Bhai’s enemies one by one; making more enemies in the process.

He’s astounded when the young and pretty Jahnvi [Ayesha Takia Azmi] professes her liking for him. Inspector Talpade’s [Mahesh Manjrekar] lustful eyes fall on Jahnvi. He doesn’t know that Jahnvi has developed a soft corner for Radhe.

Whether it’s the Golden Gang or Data Pawle’s Gang, everybody wants the biggest piece of the lucrative cake that is Mumbai and the only way to get it is to eliminate whoever gets in the way. As Mumbai reels under bloody gang wars, Commissioner Ashraf Khan [Govind Namdeo] vows to make the city crime free.

Director Prabhu Dheva serves a hardcore masala fare that’s not inventive or path-breaking by any standard, but the execution of several scenes as also of stunts takes the graph of the film Northward. In fact, if at all there’s any film that competes with GHAJINI as far as raw appeal goes, it’s WANTED. Every action/stunt/chase here is choreographed with aplomb.

Watch out for the action sequence at the interval point or the penultimate half-an-hour. The climax is sure to send scores of action lovers in frenzy, as Salman bashes the evil forces black and blue. It wouldn’t be erroneous to state that the climax is worth the price of the ticket, samosa, sandwich, popcorn, nachos and cola put together.

Not that this 18 reeler abounds in mindless action. As mentioned earlier, this one’s a hardcore masala film and the narrative has its share of light moments and romantic sequences. Even the bad man here makes you laugh intermittently [when he's not spewing venom], especially in the sequence when the Commissioner of Police holds him captive in the middle of the sea. Even the romance between Salman and Ayesha charms its way into your heart. It’s very likable.

But WANTED is not without its share of flaws. The film stands on a thin storyline and the viewer can guess what’s in store next, which means that there’s not much novelty in the plot. Besides, WANTED could’ve done without a song or two, thereby keeping its length in check.

Director Prabhu Dheva has presented Salman like never before. Most actors have drifted away from roles that hold tremendous mass appeal, that cater to the desi audience, like they did in the 1980s. SRK did it in OM SHANTI OM, Aamir Khan did it in GHAJINI and Salman does it so effortlessly in WANTED. The screenplay [Shiraz Ahmed] may not be foolproof, but it has its share of shining moments. Dialogues are clapworthy, especially those delivered by Salman.

Sajid-Wajid’s music is of a mixed variety. ‘Jalwa’ is the best of the lot and the star presence of Anil Kapoor, Govinda and also Prabhu Dheva in this track will send the viewers into raptures. The remaining tracks oscillate between good and strictly okay. This review would be incomplete without the invaluable contribution by the action director. It deserves brownie points. Cinematography too is top notch.

Salman is like a ferocious lion who roars with all his might. The show belongs to the actor, who scorches the screen every time he displays the manic anger. Without doubt, Salman gives the power to WANTED. It’s his best work to date.

Ayesha Takia Azmi is very good and the pairing with Salman looks wonderful. Vinod Khanna is sidelined. He deserved more footage. Mahesh Manjrekar is excellent. He’s only getting better with every film. Prakash Raj is first-rate. The accomplished actor adds yet another feather to his cap. Govind Namdeo is perfect.

Mahek Chahal radiates oomph. Aseem Merchant is alright. Raju Mavani is effective. Inder Kumar and Sajid are okay. Manoj Pahwa tries hard to make you laugh. Prateeksha Lonkar is as usual.

On the whole, WANTED rides on Salman, Salman and only Salman Khan’s star power. A masala film that’s aimed at the masses, WANTED is backed by tremendous hype and hoopla, which will result in the film taking an earth-shattering start at the ticket window. The Idd celebrations in the coming days will only enhance the business of the film, which means that the film will have a solid Week 1. The holidays in Week 2 should also be bountiful, thereby ensuring a strong place in the ‘Hit’ category.

Whats Your Raashee

Director: Ashutosh Gowarikar
Producer: Sunitha,Ronnie Screwvala
Starring: Priyanka Chopra, Hurman S. Baweja, Anjan Shrivastava, Visswa Badola, Rajesh Vivek, Dilip Joshi, Daya Shankar Pandey, Honey Chhaya, Darshan Jariwala, Manju Singh, Bhairavi Vaidya, Pratik Dixit, Manoj Shah, Dr. Ajit Kulkarni, Geeta Tyagi
Music Dir: Sohail Sen

Director Ashutosh Gowarikar turned director with a flop film Baazi starring his close friend Aamir Khan. No one took note of him until he made the superhit film Lagaan which not only established him as a front line director in India but won his global accolades.

He rose another few notches when he made Swades and Gowarikar completed the hattrick of his hits with his last film Jodhaa Akbar. So, after making three hits in a row what one could expect from such a celebrated director? Another entertainer, but Ashutosh’s midas touch seems to have been lost somewhere this time while making his latest What’s Your Rashee?.

If you look at the last three hits from Ashutosh’s stable of films, each one of them had major stars, and it was their sheer presence in the film and its story that made Gowarikar’s film a rage even before its official release.

This time he put his bet on a novice, Harman Baweja who had made a disastrous debut with his home production Love Story 2050. Harman Baweja saved his face from this super flop when a director like Ashutosh Gowariker announced his next with him, What’s Your Rashee?

Ashutosh Gowariker was also recently in the news for rebuking and turning down several film awards’ functions. People in the Hindi film industry started labeling him as an egotist. Many would think that indeed this flop has given him the necessary “speed breaker” in his career so that he can start thinking of film making all over again.

Ashutosh had a good story in his hand from a novel written by Madhu Rey, but what he did not have was a right script for his film. The film has all the naach-ganna and rona-dhona that have been traditional ingredients of a hindi pot boiler, but he failed in getting the plot points of the film right.

What’s Your Rashee? Is actually like a plate full of different kinds of sweets served during the Durga Puja festiveal. You want to eat each one of them because they look yummy, but once you start eating them you realize that there is not much difference in one from another. By the time you are about to taste the last one, you are fed up of the taste. Same thing happens with the stories interwoven in the plot of this film.

A young boy (Harman Baweja) who has been dreaming all his life for a love marriage is suddenly put in a situation where he has to find a bride for himself in a limited number of days. He has no clue as to what to do now, so he plans to meet one girl of each zodiac sign.

Sounds ridiculous, doesn’t it ? Yes, the plot of the film is so crazy that a common viewer finds it hard to keep track of what is going on. The different girls played by Priyanka Chopra may be a mile stone for the actress and she may find her name entered in some record books for this, but it is not the same case for the film producers.

May be the producers knew the fate of the film in advance and that is why for the last two three days there was a huge cry over piracy of the film and they even went ahead and filed legal suits against their labs and digital distributors ! All said and done, What’s Your Rashee? would have been a non-starter even if there was no piracy.

The weakest link of the film is its script. The film never really takes off from the ground, it moves on the same geographical level except in the end when the director tries to make the film melodramatic by inserting few characters from out of the blue.

Director Ashutosh Gowariker has failed in this film miserably, not only on the directorial front but also on chosing a wrong script. Harman Baweja had huge hopes from this film but his rashee seems to be affected by some bad planets, he needs a good astrologer for sure now.

Priyanka Chopra will not suffer much from the failure of this film because she has a line of super hits in the recent past. What’s Your Rashee? is a more-than-below average film that has no scope of survival at the box office.
